Rep. David Day Honored by
Missouri Forest Products Association

BRANSON, Mo. – The Missouri Forest Products Association has recognized State Rep. David Day, R-Dixon, for his efforts during the 2011 legislative session to provide tax relief to Missouri’s timber industry. The association presented Day with the 2011 Friend of the Industry Award during its annual summer meeting at the Chateau on the Lake resort in Branson.
MFPA honored Day in large part because of his work on SB 55, which changes the classification of sawmills and planing mills from commercial property to agricultural. Specifically, it reclassifies sawmills at the agriculture tax rate of 12 percent. Currently, they are taxed at the business tax rate, which is 32 percent. The change will result in a significant decrease in property tax rates for timber mills in Missouri. Day said the change was necessary to help the milling industry that saw 90 mills closed from 2006 to 2009.
“By reducing the tax burden on our timber mills we can give the industry a significant boost that will help it grow during these difficult times,” said Day. “It
was a pleasure to work with the Missouri Forest Products Association to get this change passed into law, we have been working on it for about three years now. I am honored to be recognized for the part I played in securing passage of legislation I believe will have a positive impact on the timber industry.”
Rep. Day served on the State Board of Directors of Missouri Farm Bureau for 13 year where one of his duties was working with the Forestry Committee. Currently Rep. Day is serving in his last term in the Missouri House of Representatives due to term limits.
